Solutions

The new Q Range, available in 21 special profiles of Stair Nosing, proved to be the perfect solution. This unique Stair Nosing design proved to be the most suitable solution for installation in Drapers Mills Primary Academy. Owing to its all over tread design, which provides a slip resistant surface from the nose to the back edge, gives the benefit of extra safety when ascending or descending stairs.

The satin etched aluminium riser surface provides the double benefit of being scratch resistant and it inhibits the potential for ‘glare’, which is one of the requirements of the latest BS8300: 2008 and Building Regulation guidelines applicable to stairways in areas of public access.

Stair Nosing Case Study

Customer:  Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh
Contractor: Gordon & Halliday, Edinburgh
Distributor : McMillan, Edinburgh

Challenge

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh is housed in an imposing neo-classical building and is residence to Scotland’s outstanding national collection of modern and contemporary art. The gallery is open all year round and admission is free so attracts large numbers of visitors. As a public building the safety of those visitors and staff needs to be considered on the stairways. However the style of the interior also needed to be taken into account so it will match up to the building’s heritage and architecture and the art which is it is home to.

Solution

A slenderline nosing was chosen in an anodised finish to maintain the clean stylish look. The S Range stair nosings are a premium range of stair nosings for use with slim gauge floor coverings such as vinyls and lino from all major manufacturers.

Along with the standard black treads, a photoluminescent infill was used at the top and bottom of the stairways which will help reduce slips and falls by improving step edge contrast in all light conditions.

The contractors utilised Quantum’s free measuring service, QSMS, which offers the industry’s most accurate measurements, speeds up the measuring process and means less waste on the project, ensuring value for the Government funded institution.

‘Tick Tock’... Introducing the 60 minute Quantum “Flexyfixing” Stair Nosing solution

‘Tick Tock’... Introducing the 60 minute Quantum “Flexyfixing” Stair Nosing solution

More Lean help for our customers (and our customers’ customers)

Minimise waste on site; of time and material and money

Limited access and extensive levels of disruption have long been key challenges in the refurbishment of commercial and office buildings. Quantum Flooring has, in conjunction with flooring adhesives specialists Rewmar Ltd recently developed an all-in-one solution to these problems in the form of its Flexyfix system.

The Lean system maximises a flexible high grab and rapid cure time that is delivered by Flexyfix. This enables the contractor to open the staircase to pedestrian traffic 60 minutes after the last Stair Nosing has been installed and checked by the contractor. This is a major benefit where disruption levels need to be kept to a minimum and frequently enables work that would normally be scheduled for overnight or out of office hours to take place during the normal working day.  Mess is also minimised because there is no dust caused by drilling and any adhesive smears can be easily cleaned off.

A number of contractors have commented that speed and accuracy are the biggest benefits delivering both convenience and huge cost savings as the use of Flexyfix makes the use of screws and drilling redundant. The trouble free fitting method takes less than 90 seconds to install a single Stair Nosing.

In a case study at a high street bank (see Quantum website) using the Flexyfix fitting method, “Flexyfixing”, work that was scheduled to take place over a weekend was completed in under one hour. Only one fitter was required during office hours making a grand saving of more than £300 in labour charges alone, plus another £80- £100 pounds in drill bits giving a savings in the order of £400.

The ”Flexyfixing” system revolutionises Stair Nose installation and can be used with all of Quantum Flooring’s products, especially Q range. Key features of Q range include a unique edge to edge tread that provides a slip resistant surface for the entire depth of the Stair Nosing tread. Another important feature is the scratch resistant material ensuring the Nosing is easy to maintain. Also, the satin etched riser helps to meet Equality Act safety guidelines.

Q range has a varied colour range and is manufactured using ‘LEAN’ principles which guarantee efficiency and make the product an ideal match for the quick and easy Flexyfix system. Please contact Quantum Flooring on 0161 627 4222 or visit www.quantumflooring.co.uk/qrange for more information.

CHALLENGE

The Vyne Community School is a co-educational, specialist school for the performing arts based in Basingstoke. As part of a major refurbishment project, the client required a durable and hard wearing Stair Nosing that would meet the rigorous standards of the school’s health and safety policy as well as current Building Regulations. The Stair Nosings would also need to be easy to maintain and had to be fitted quickly during a school holiday period.

SOLUTION

Q Range was perfectly suited to such high foot traffic environments as it combines maximum durability with the highest standards of safety through a unique edge to edge tread.

The school’s Head Teacher took great interest in Quantum Floorings’ new Q Range of Stair Nosings as they offered a Building Regulations best practice solution. They were available in the specific colour required as well as meeting all the other key specifications for durability, maintenance and tight delivery time scales.

Once the Q Range was selected, Quantum Flooring’s free measuring service, QSMS, was used to measure each step individually. Once complete each step measurement was sent directly to the Quantum Flooring in Oldham for cutting. Meaning within two days each step was delivered individually labelled and ready for fitting on site.

To help with speeding up the fitting process of installation, Flooring Contractor Just Floors also choose Quantum Floorings no screw fitting system, reducing time on site whilst still delivering a high quality installation.

Furthermore no drilling was required into the solid Terrazzo floor and there were no pipes in the completed flooring.

Ultimately selecting Quantum Flooring products helped Vyne Community School save money, time and waste.

Q Range Key Benefits:

·         Patent Pending edge to edge tread

·         No dirt traps

·         Hard wearing

Quantum Flooring Stair Nosing Building Regulations Explained

Building Regulations & Guidelines Made Easy ….

“Stairs, ladders and ramps shall be designed constructed and installed as to be safe for people moving between different levels in or about the building.”

(Building Regulation Document K, 2013, Schedule 1)

There are four documents that give guidance to help satisfy this requirement:

1)      Building Regulation Document K – Protection from falling

2)      Building Regulation Document M – Access to and use of buildings

3)      BS8300:2009+A1:2010 – Lighting of stepped access & slip resistance

4)      Building Research Information Paper – IP15/03: Proprietary nosings for non-domestic stairs

These four documents cover guidance for five different considerations for Stair Nosing and stairway design:

Creating a Constant Band of Colour

Documents K, M and BS8300 cover:

A) The recommended dimensions of a Stair Nosing:

The tread should measure between 55-65mm and the riser 30-55mm. This ensures there is a large enough band on the step edge. Quantum Flooring have a wide selection of Stair Nosings which meet these dimensions.

B) The colour requirements of the Stair Nosing tread and riser:

The colour of the stair nosing is required to differ from that of the floor covering. Every colour has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of between 0 (Black) and 100 (White). There must be 30 points difference between the stair nosing LRV and the floorcovering, e.g. If the floorcovering has a LRV of 50, then the stair nosing should have a LRV of between 0-20 or 80-100.

Colour (and the Light Reflectance Value – LRV) is important in particular when specifying to follow the Building Regulation. Even if the stairway is not in an area of Public Access the correct colour selection is important to make the stairway attractive. Quantum Flooring offers 19 different tread and nosing colour options for Stair Nosings in its PVC range.

Creating a Safe Stairway

Documents M and the BS8300:2009 make reference to:

C) The assistance provided by a tactile surface at the approaches to a stairway:

A tactile approach should be installed as a hazard warning surface on the top and bottom approaches of the staircase, which will warn pedestrians that they are approaching a staircase.

D) The slip resistance of the tread surface of a Stair Nosing:

The tread material used is important for the safety and performance of a stairway. There are two recommended tests that can be carried out to determine the slip resistance of a flooring material. The pendulum test (PTV) method and a surface micro roughness measurement. Either of these can be used to give an indication of the slip resistance of a material, A PTV greater than 36 is considered to be suitable, however, the PTV is difficult to measure due to the size of the nosing. Quantums Stair standard internal tread material has been tested using a micro roughness meter, and in new and also used (on site) conditions gives a surface roughness reading greater than 20μm, which is classified as being of a low slip potential.

Finally the BRE information paper IP/15/03 introduces:

E) Guidance about the coverage of the tread material on the top surface of the Stair Nosing:

The tread is the surface of the Stair Nosing which receives ascending or descending footfall. The Stair Nosing tread material should extend to the front edge to the point at which it meets the vertical face to minimise the risk of a slip in descent. Every profile with Quantum Floorings Q Range meets this guidance.

There are a number of other considerations that should be made when looking to create best practice staircases, these include looking to avoid:

» Bullnosed steps - these can create a trip hazard to partially sighted users, who use their foot to find the edge of the step.

» Open riser steps - again these create a slip hazard.

» Shiny metal - as these can create glare in artificial or direct sunlight. Throughout this guide the products that can be used to ensure best practice can be identified by the ‘Building Regulations’  best practice stamp.

Ecoglo Stair Nosing Case Study

CHALLENGE
The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester is a District General Hospital serving much of central Hampshire and is one of three hospitals serving a population of approximately 600,000 across Hampshire and parts of west Berkshire.

Just Floors were asked by the Hospital Trust directly to help out with a Health and Safety issue on around 70 steps that are located outside the main Hospital building. The steps run from the car park level that is situated at the top of a hill down to the main hospital building that is on a lower level. There was also a requirement for the stair edge contrast to be visible 24 hours a day.

“We needed a stair nosing for a poorly lit external stair case and Quantum offered the perfect solution which matched both the environment and our client’s demanding requirements."
                                                                                                                                            Flooring Contractor

SOLUTION
Quantum Flooring recommended the SF225R profile with Ecoglo Yellow and Photo Front tread as it offered a failsafe photo luminescent finish. Just floors then presented a sample to the trust directly to see what they thought and the product was subsequently approved as the ideal solution.

This was made possible due to Quantum Floorings lean manufacturing practices.

This led to Just Floors placing an order for 95 metres of SF225R with the Ecoglo inserts. They received the requested Stair Nosings the very next day, rapidly delivered to site by Quantum.

What is a Stair Nosing?

A Stair Nosing is an angled profile consisting of an aluminium or PVCu carrier with a slip resistant tread material on the upper surface (tread).

Stair Nosings are installed on stairways to:

1.       Define and highlight the edge of the step.
2.       Protect the nose of the step and to prevent wear to the floor covering thus prolonging life.
3.       Also offer, through the correct colour choice a attractive aesthetic finish to a stairway.

If the correct Stair Nosing is specified for a project, then the stairways involved will always be – Safe, Durable and Attractive.
