Stair Nosings for Schools – Case Study

Challenge

Ward Flooring were required to fit a Stair Nosing which met both DDA and Equality Act guidelines. Whilst helping to create an attractive and colourful new learning environment for the school’s students.

Solutions

The new Q Range, available in 21 special profiles of Stair Nosing, proved to be the perfect solution. This unique Stair Nosing design proved to be the most suitable solution for installation in Drapers Mills Primary Academy. Owing to its all over tread design, which provides a slip resistant surface from the nose to the back edge, gives the benefit of extra safety when ascending or descending stairs.

The satin etched aluminium riser surface provides the double benefit of being scratch resistant and it inhibits the potential for ‘glare’, which is one of the requirements of the latest BS8300: 2008 and Building Regulation guidelines applicable to stairways in areas of public access.

RIBA approved CPD ‘STEP ON IT!’ STAIRWAY SAFETY

 

This free digital CPD looks at the guidelines for the specification of a safe stairway. This digital presentation and discussion deals with the subject of how to make commercial stairways safe and meet with all current UK building regulation guidelines, which are seen as a gold standard across the world.

 

The CPD presentation includes:

 

- What stair nosings are designed to achieve and how to select the right one

- Key Legislation and Industry Standards

- How recent BRE and Equality Act (Formally DDA) guidelines affect specifications

- Environmental and Health and Safety considerations

- Examples of best practice

 

The seminar lasts 45-60 minutes including time for a Q and A session. All seminars are part of the RIBA core curriculum syllabus and earn double CPD points for those attending the seminars.

Flooring Key Terms

Tread
The part of the step/nosing that the foot is placed on.

Riser
The vertical part of the step/nosing

Tread Material
This is the anti slip material that is secured in the channel of the stair nosing.  It is also known as the Infill material

Gauge
This term describes the thickness of a floor covering.  Quantum use two gauges: slim gauge (Eg vinyl flooring) and heavy gauge (eg carpet)

DDAStands for Disability Discrimination Act – part of Approved Document M where the main reference to stair nosing is “All nosings are made apparent by means of a permanently contrasting material 55mm wide on both the tread on the riser”  full information on the DDA guidelines can be seen here

Secret Fixing
A method of installation that hides the fixing screws.  The tread material is supplied separate to the stair nosing, the nosing is installed on the step before the tread material is secured in place covering the screw heads.

Straight
Is the term to describe the shape of a nosing where the riser portion is about 90° to the tread.

Rake Back
Is the term to describe the shape of a nosing where the riser portion is angled at about 83° to the tread.

Bull Nosed
Term used to describe the shape of a nosing to fit stairs with a radius.  Commonly seen on wooden stair cases.

Chevron
Describes a stair nosing with an angled front that can be used to fit both straight and Rake back nosings.

Dim/Diminishing Strip
Is another name for our bevel strips and describe a profile that ramps from nothing to a set gauge.

Weld Rod
Is used in conjunction with our skirting’s to create a thermal, waterproof bond between them and a vinyl floor covering.  Quantum have a number of different colours available to suit most floor coverings.
