How did stair nosings become a standard feature on stairways?

The origins of the product known as a stair nosing (a protective safety edge on the nose of steps) is not important enough to be officially recorded. However, a clue to its known history is in one of its key functions namely safety. In particular slip resistance, since it was from the company of Ferodo that specialised in the manufacture of friction materials that stair nosings first appeared during the 1950’s – and we cannot be more precise than that!

Based in Chapel en-le-Frith in Derbyshire, as friction product specialists, Ferodo was the world’s most renowned producer of braking materials for anything that moved; cars, trucks, trains, planes (when on the ground!) industrial equipment etc. Initially all the friction materials produced were made of woven asbestos impregnated with resins; well proven to dissipate the heat generated by braking. Asbestos continued to be the base material for brake linings and pads until Health and Safety caught up with the serious risk posed by this material.

An early product development programme came up with another use for the woven asbestos cloth. Strips cut to step widths and put around the nose of steps considerably reduced the risk of slips on stairs…...and to stop fraying at the edges an aluminium ‘carrier’ soon followed. The stair nosing as we know it was born.

Asbestos has long since been removed from the treads used in stair nosings; pvc or rubber based materials now provide the slip resistant surface needed for products to perform their safety function. Durability is another performance function of these products since their installation also protects floor coverings used on step treads from unnecessary wear. Aluminium is still a favoured carrier material, although PVCu is an alternative that is becoming more and more acceptable.

Despite the shortcomings of the original treads, Ferodo nevertheless introduced a product that has been proven to enhance the safety of stairways around the world, where British trained specifiers become involved in construction projects, for over 50 years. The brand of Ferodo stair nosings is no more – other companies have taken over the baton, and through product design have developed profiles that accommodate all modern step shapes, sizes and floor coverings.
The features that stair nosings offer to the finish of stairways have now become embodied as guidelines in current Building Regulations, British Standards and BR papers.

Stair Nosing Case Study

Customer:  Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh
Contractor: Gordon & Halliday, Edinburgh
Distributor : McMillan, Edinburgh

Challenge

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh is housed in an imposing neo-classical building and is residence to Scotland’s outstanding national collection of modern and contemporary art. The gallery is open all year round and admission is free so attracts large numbers of visitors. As a public building the safety of those visitors and staff needs to be considered on the stairways. However the style of the interior also needed to be taken into account so it will match up to the building’s heritage and architecture and the art which is it is home to.

Solution

A slenderline nosing was chosen in an anodised finish to maintain the clean stylish look. The S Range stair nosings are a premium range of stair nosings for use with slim gauge floor coverings such as vinyls and lino from all major manufacturers.

Along with the standard black treads, a photoluminescent infill was used at the top and bottom of the stairways which will help reduce slips and falls by improving step edge contrast in all light conditions.

The contractors utilised Quantum’s free measuring service, QSMS, which offers the industry’s most accurate measurements, speeds up the measuring process and means less waste on the project, ensuring value for the Government funded institution.

Cutting Corners Has Developed Major Breakthrough

Cutting Corners Ltd has developed a major breakthrough with their innovative products and installation system that will benefit the flooring industry.

The Cutting Corners range of preformed seamless covings along with the ‘Mitre Maker’ stencil and installation system will bring a new approach to installing vinyl in internal corners.

The ‘Trimitre’ used in conjunction with the ‘Mitre Maker’ stencil provides the conventional flooring contractor with the ability to install internal mitres in clean air rooms and controlled environments.  The system gives the client a snag free internal that is easy to clean and maintain, reduces any build up and hibernation of bacteria therefore extending the longevity and lifecycle benefits of the vinyl.  Uniformity, consistency, strength and support are also major benefits as well as being pleasing on the eye.

Tarkett UK, a leading vinyl manufacturer, is the first company to approve, endorse and now specify the system.  Steve Urwin, Marketing Manager for Tarkett UK said “The Tarkett UK Technical Team are seriously impressed with the Cutting Corners range, particularly the ‘Trimitre’ seamless covings for clean air rooms.  It works great with our Tarkett ‘ProtectWall’ and makes achieving the perfect seamless installation so much easier.”

SAS Flooring Ltd, a prominent flooring contractor in the UK  who specialise in the installation of vinyl in clean air rooms, have tried and tested Cutting Corners products and installation system throughout the development process and received positive feedback from clients.  Rob Chick, Senior Plant Manager Oxford Biomedica said “We were very happy with the installation at our plant and would highly recommend using their system.  We need to clean and maintain our facility to a high standard and the finish the system provides enables us to do that with ease.”

The Cutting Corners products and installation system has enabled John Abbott Flooring Ltd, www.johnabbottflooring.co.uk/products-and-services/clean-room-installations to enter into the clean air room industry in a unique partnership arrangement with SAS Flooring Ltd.

The Cutting Corners range includes the ‘Floormitre’ internal seamless cove that is used when vinyl is installed on floors.  This innovative cove has many benefits and attributes and ends the many issues that flooring contractors have had to endure when fitting vinyl internals.  The ‘Floormitre’ cove can be used with either capping strip or diminishing strip at standard construction industry heights of 100mm and 150mm.  Its seamless radius profile provides a perfect smooth surface for vinyl to sit neatly on to and a 90 degree upright section that fits snugly into the corner and hides any gaps or damaged walls that have been left behind by the builders or have simply just degraded over the years giving the flooring contractor the ability to weld the internal mitre perfectly and snag free.

Andy Bury of AFB Flooring Solutions Ltd said We were very fortunate to be asked to trial the ‘Floormitre’, as soon as I'd heard of this product I was sure it was going to be a big success. We were sent samples and used them straight away and the results were faultless.  As we all know the walls are very rarely in an acceptable state when we come to cove our material so I was even more pleased with the ‘Floormitre’ than I even thought I would be.  The ease off fitting the internal corners after applying the ‘Floormitre’ was noticed straight away.  All corners are the same in uniformity, which is something you rarely get with the state of some walls.  Welding was easy as the strength and upright section of the ‘Floormitre’ means the weld no longer falls through the standard cove former.  We have trialled this product on some very substandard walls and I have to say the results are phenomenal, so much so that we would not do a cap and cove job without using these as a standard practice and don't think it will be long before it's a standard practice throughout the industry.  I cannot praise this product enough”.

Cutting Corners have linked up with Floorskills, a highly reputable and nationally recognised flooring training provider to deliver bespoke tailored practical courses that will be sanctioned and approved by the CITB.  This will provide the flooring contractor with a unique qualification they can then use in the clean air room industry with confidence.

Floorskills will also be delivering cap and cove courses using the ‘Floormitre’ internal cove.

Cutting Corners have just received notification of a granted design registration for their latest innovative product, the ‘External’ cove that will now be in circulation in 2014.

You can find out more about Cutting Corners by visiting their website www.cuttingcorners.org.uk or by contacting Quantum PSL who are the exclusive distributors of the Cutting Corners products.  www.quantum-ps.co.uk
